CERTAIN project

Resilient and continuous safety assurance methodology for CCAM and its HMI components

CERTAIN delivers a resilient, human-centric framework for continuous safety assurance in Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) across Europe. Placing Safety, Trust, Acceptance and Comfort (STAC) at the heart of every vehicle lifecycle stage—from design to deployment—it ensures technology evolves with people in mind.

Building on the HEADSTART and SUNRISE frameworks, CERTAIN develops a unified, use-case-agnostic methodology applicable across automation levels, vehicle types and technologies.

By integrating AI-based validation, Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) and connectivity (V2X) assessment, whole-lifecycle monitoring, and both virtual and physical testing, the project extends Europe’s harmonised Safety Assurance Framework (SAF). New SAF components will be tested in four diverse use case groups to demonstrate safety, trust, and user acceptance.

A strong consortium of research, industry and regulatory partners ensures alignment and credibility, while ongoing collaboration with policymakers fosters public confidence.

Our goal?!
Enable trustworthy, scalable CCAM adoption through adaptive, regulation-ready safety assurance.

Project facts

CERTAIN is the only project funded under the Horizon Europe call HORIZON-CL5-2024-D6-01-02: “Scenario-based safety assurance of CCAM and related HMI in a dynamically evolving transport system” within the CCAM Partnership. The project runs from June 2025 to May 2028 and receives an EU contribution of €14 million under the Horizon Europe framework programme.

About CERTAIN

Ambition

The project addresses five major challenges: harmonised safety validation, human-centric interaction, lifecycle assurance, trustworthy AI and connected V2X validation - advancing R&I maturity from TRL 2–5. Together, these advances establish a European reference for CCAM safety assurance, strengthen public trust and accelerate market readiness for automated mobility.
