About

CERTAIN is developing a human-centric Safety Assurance Framework (SAF) for Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM), focused on Safety, Trust, Acceptance and Comfort (STAC).

By combining advanced AI validation, user-centred HMI design and continuous lifecycle assessment, the project ensures that automated vehicles interact safely and predictably with human road users throughout their lifetime.

We:

  • develop a scenario-based, resilient safety assurance framework that adapts to human cognitive needs;
  • validate HMI, AI and V2X systems across the entire lifecycle of automated driving;
  • demonstrate results through real-world use cases spanning diverse vehicles, automation levels and environments;
  • promote harmonised standards and certification, ensuring alignment with EU regulatory and policy goals.

What CERTAIN delivers:

  • Scenario-based resilient safety framework
  • Continuous in-service monitoring
  • AI and V2X validation
  • Harmonised standards and certification
  • A framework responsive to human behaviour
  • Real-world testing across multiple automation levels
  • Alignment with Europe’s vision for sustainable, competitive and safe mobility

What makes CERTAIN unique:

  • Builds on SUNRISE’s SAF, extending it with components ready for real-world use
  • Integrates AI, HMI, lifecycle monitoring and connectivity in one framework
  • Involves 25 partners from research, industry and regulation
  • Coordinated by Applus IDIADA, a European leader in vehicle safety and validation
  • Engages directly with EU regulatory bodies and international standards organisations
  • Tackles safety, competitiveness and sustainability in one unified approach

Project facts

CERTAIN is the only project funded under the Horizon Europe call HORIZON-CL5-2024-D6-01-02: “Scenario-based safety assurance of CCAM and related HMI in a dynamically evolving transport system” within the CCAM Partnership.

The project runs from June 2025 to May 2028 and receives an EU contribution of €13,999,414.78 under the Horizon Europe framework programme. Coordinator: Applus IDIADA (Spain).
