How CERTAIN works: building confidence in automated mobility
CERTAIN combines scientific excellence, stakeholder collaboration and real-world validation to ensure that automated systems remain safe, trustworthy and accepted throughout their lifecycle.
The Safety Assurance Framework integrates virtual and physical testing, covering technologies such as AI and V2X communication under realistic, repeatable and scalable conditions. Aligned with the UNECE NATM and the EU AI Act, it embeds the principles of trustworthy AI - oversight, transparency and accountability - to ensure automation serves people safely and ethically.
Human-centric by design, the framework applies the STAC principles to assess how users perceive, understand and respond to automated systems, addressing inclusivity across all road users. Through In-Service Monitoring and Reporting (ISMR), safety validation continues after deployment, detecting risks from updates, wear or environmental changes and feeding this data back into the validation loop.
Finally, CERTAIN validates its approach through four real-world use cases, ensuring the framework is robust, scalable and directly applicable to deployment.
