Key results

CERTAIN will deliver six key results that together form a resilient, human-centric and continuous Safety Assurance Framework for CCAM. These results drive progress in testing, validation and trust - enabling Europe to scale automated mobility safely.

Resilient, Continuous and Human-Centric SAF

A validated, use-case-agnostic framework covering all stages of vehicle development and operation.

HMI Validation Component

A human-centred methodology with measurable criteria for comfort, trust and inclusivity across diverse users.

Continuous Safety Validation Component

An In-Service Monitoring and Reporting system that tracks system performance after deployment and ensures ongoing safety.

Trustworthy AI Validation Component

A scenario-based validation approach for AI functions aligned with the EU AI Act and ISO standards.

V2X Testing Methods

Scenario-based tools for validating connected vehicle, infrastructure and road-user interactions under real-world conditions.

Use Cases for Validation

Four Use Cases that demonstrate and refine the framework across different automation levels and traffic environments.

Collectively, these results will create a harmonised European reference for CCAM safety validation, support international standardisation and strengthen public trust in automation.

Challenges and mitigation

To achieve lasting impact, CERTAIN proactively addresses challenges related to regulation, market readiness, user behaviour and technological change. It builds on a harmonised European baseline (SUNRISE) and works closely with regulatory bodies to align rules.

A human-centric approach fosters user acceptance, while engagement through WP7 promotes awareness of safe automation. Alignment with the CCAM Partnership, and collaboration with projects such as FAME and SYNERGIES, prevents duplication and ensures complementarity. The SAF itself is use-case-agnostic and adaptable, ready to integrate emerging technologies and evolving AI capabilities.

By anticipating and mitigating risks, CERTAIN reinforces Europe’s capacity to scale automated mobility safely, responsibly and with public confidence.
